Reshaping a Future

Reshaping a Future

Art therapy is a place where survivors often find and experience breakthroughs that can alter their future. This was true for Stella. She was having a particularly difficult day, was agitated and had trouble sitting still while she modeled clay in an art therapy group. While making several pieces she realized that she needed to be patient with the media and patient with herself. She needed to slow down, and use a ‘gentle touch’ to get the clay to work – all while recognizing that these were the things she needed to do in ‘real life’, too, to make her life work. With time, she became more relaxed and more confident with the materials and excitedly created several pieces… each more intricate and expressive. Once finished, she was beaming and expressing pride in herself for not giving up, for being patient and slowing down. She was surprised she could ‘do it’.  When asked, she shared that she, “hadn’t felt that good in a long time.”
